WELCOME TO IAESTE SLOVENIA

Slovenia is still a quite unknown green pearl that lies in the heart of Europe where the Alps meet the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain meets the Karst.

 

 

It is a small country (20,273 km2) with only 2 million of hospitable people. We have been a part of the European Union since 2004. Ljubljana is the capital of country and it is situated right in the centre of the country.

BEFORE ARRIVING TO SLOVENIA

IAESTE Slovenia is a student organised country. That means that Slovenian students will take care of you.

Every student who is accepted for an internship ...

… will be contacted by the “Summer reception coordinator – SR coordinator” approximately one month before arrival by email.

In the email you will receive the following:

about which you will talk more with the SR coordinator.

You will fill out the google form with details about your arrival.

2 special forms

You will fill out 2 forms regarding Assignment of Personal Identification Number of Citizen (EMŠO): Request form and Power of Attorney form.

NOTE

Usually the arrangement of your accommodation is done as described below. Be aware that your arrangement may differ from the description below. In every case you have to pay for the accommodation. Please understand that we are doing everything we can to find for you a good accommodation, as it takes quite an effort to find place for a shorter period of renting.

If you arrive before July or after September, we will try to arrange a private room in an apartment with shared utilities (kitchen, bathroom, etc.)

If you arrive between July and September you will stay at a student dormitory with shared bedroom and utilities. It is a great place to meet a lot of new people!

AFTER THE ARRIVAL TO SLOVENIA

On the day of your arrival to Slovenia usually someone from IAESTE Slovenia will wait for you at the bus/train station and accompany you to your room or give you exact directions how to get there. If you arrive during a weekend you will probably have to stay at hostel or if it will be possible at some IAESTE member’s place until Monday, since the Check-in office of the student dormitories is not open during the weekend.

The next thing you will have to do is to arrange all the paperwork. Our summer reception team will help you with that as much as they can.

 

Arrangement of all the documents takes a few days, therefore it is recommended that you arrive to Slovenia a few days before the official start of your internship.

To arrange all documents you have to visit the following offices:

•The Tax Office
•The Bank Office
•The International Office of the University (Student identity card, Student meals, Slovenian phone number)
•Student working agency (Študentski servis)
•Public transport office

FREE TIME, FUN TIME!

We know that internship is important but beside work there is a lot of fun things going on in Slovenia.

  • WEEKLY DRINK

    During the week we meet at least once for a drink somewhere in Ljubljana. Every week a different bar, why not.

  • GOING AROUND

    We organize a lot of different activities, especially during the weekends. Slovenia is known for its amazing nature so we often go hiking to the mountains, walking through the forest, swimming in beautiful lakes and sea. We do typical trips to the most touristic places like Bled, Postojna cave, Piran and so on.

  • FOOD

    Beside nature we also explore Slovenia's culture, food and drinks.

  • FESTIVALS

    During the summer you are never bored because you can find a lot of festivals not only in Ljubljana and Maribor but also in all bigger cities around Slovenia. If you like music, no problem, thousands of music festivals featuring all kinds of music happen around Slovenia. Do you like to taste local cuisine? Guess what, you will find wine, beer or food festivals everywhere.

You will be informed about all the fun activities with IAESTE people in a special FB group. Naturally you can also propose some fun activities in this FB group as well. If you are not yet a member of this FB group, ask somebody from IAESTE Slovenia to add you.

Slovenia is a very small country so you can see it all. In the morning you can climb mountains in the north in the afternoon you can drink wine in the south and in the evening you can watch sunset at the seaside in the west. It is that easy, especially when you do it with amazing people from all over the world.

TAX RETURN?

Tax return is only possible for countries with which Slovenia signed the contract to avoid double taxation for students. Information below changes yearly, therefore please be aware that currently maybe the situation for your country is different than from described below! Current data is from September 2016.

Countries with whom Slovenia has signed the contract to avoid double taxation for students are: Albania, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belarus, Bosnia, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, India, Kosovo, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan.

Countries with whom Slovenia has not signed the contract to avoid double taxation for students are: Armenia, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Iceland, Israel, Korea,Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Ukraine.

The general procedure which an intern or a student has to abide for the tax return is described below.

A student or an intern closes their bank account one week before the end of their internship. The documents you need at the beginning: a) your passport, b) a copy of your passport, c) tax residence permit. The tax residence permit is usually issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Visit the Student working agency (Študentski servis). Ask for the KIDO 12 form and fill it out.

Go to the Tax office. Hand in the paperwork at the dispatch centre (Vložišče). The paperwork you hand in at dispatch centre includes: filled out KIDO 12 form, a copy of your passport and the tax residence permit.

You receive the money in a few months on your home bank account. The amount of tax a student or an intern gets back is 22,5% of the pay, while the 15,5% goes to the Slovenian pension fund.

VISA?

Slovenia is a member of the European Union and part of the Schengen Zone.
Everybody who needs a Schengen VISA also needs a VISA for entering Slovenia. There is a list of countries for which VISA is required: Schengen VISA info

 

Special Case: if you are already studying in EU and you have a residence permit for one of EU countries, you don’t need a visa for Slovenia. Just make sure that your residence permit is valid during your whole stay in Slovenia.

 

When a student is accepted for an internship IAESTE Slovenia gets in contact with every student in order to get a visa. The student is contacted by the Slovenian VISA coordinator with the information about where to apply for VISA and which documents are needed.

Important! VISA procedure must start early enough – at least 1,5 months before arrival.

 

General information about the VISA application can be found on the website of the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

 

 

There are two types of VISA:

Staying up to 90 days: Schengen visa (type C)

Applying for the Schengen visa can be done in every EU country embassy. For the required documents the MFA website should be checked. IAESTE Slovenia will get in contact with every student to go through VISA procedure and apply required documents.

 

The short VISA stay is not required for the citizens of the countries with different agreements (more information on the following link).

Long-stay VISA: from 90 to 360 days (type D)

This VISA is required for all the citizens of non-Schengen member countries. It can be issued only at Slovenian embassy even if it is not present in the country of the student.
